Leonid Afremov (b.1955)
Bravo, 2010, oil on canvas.
Leonid Afremov was born in city of Vitebsk (Belarus), amazingly enough in the same town as Marc Chagall who founded the Vitebsk Art School along with Malevich and Kandinsky. Afremov graduated from this Art School and is one of its elite members. In 1990s he moved to the USA, now resides in Mexico. Afremov’s paintings are often vividly-coloured landscapes, cityscapes and figures, and are typically painted using a palette knife and oil paint. His work has been greatly influenced by contemporary cityscape impressionist Michael Flohr.

John Singer Sargent
Spanish Dancer, c. 1880 - 1881, oil on canvas, private collection.
Sargent was an American painter, and a leading portrait painter of his era. He visited Spain when he was 23 and there studied the paintings of Velázquez with a passion, absorbing the master’s technique. In his travels Sargent gathered ideas for future works. He was entranced with Spanish music and dance. The trip also re-awakened his own talent for music (which was nearly equal to his artistic talent), which found visual expression in his masterpieces El Jaleo and Spanish Dancer (a preparatory oil study for the main character in El Jaleo).

A keen observer of women, Degas cultivated an objectivity that allowed him to catch his subjects in poses as natural and spontaneous as those in a photograph.

Palmer Hayden
Jeunesse, date unknown, watercolor on paper, 14 x 17 inches, collection of Dr. Meredith F. Sirmans, NY.
Palmer Hayden is a famous artist from the Harlem Renaissance movement. He painted in both oils and watercolors, and was a prolific artist of his era. This painting shows a group of African Americans dancing to jazz music. This is significant because jazz music was greatly spread throughout America during the Harlem Renaissance and the piece shows the excitement it brought to the people around.
