Rolf Armstrong was one of the best pin-up artists of the beginning of the twentieth century. He was very prolific and popular during his lifetime, his work appeared on the covers of many magazines. Stars who posed for his portraits included Greta Garbo and Boris Karloff.

Armstrong’s subjects were strong, confident women with an innate femininity and subtle sexuality. A perfectionist all his life, he never worked from photographs and was always in search of a perfect model. He mastered the technical aspects of contemporary publishing as he wanted his work to have the same “freshness and beaming colour” on paper as on canvas.
